A 29-year-old Battle Creek father is now facing a murder charge after the death of his 8-month-old son.
Kyle Kregling returned to Calhoun County District Court on Friday for accusation on the new charges of open murder and first-degree child abuse in connection with the death of his son, Chris Kregling.
The eight-month-old baby died about 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where he was taken Monday after Kyle Kregling called 911 at 10:03 a.m. said by the baby was insensitive after a fall.
After the investigation, Prosecutor David Gilbert authorized charges of first-degree and second-degree child abuse but said Friday the charges were changed after the child died.
Kregling appeared by video for accusation Friday afternoon before Magistrate Amber Straub. If convicted on first-degree or felony murder he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
